Healthy Development Checklist
Research suggests that the design of our neighborhoods and communities can seriously influence the level of physical activity, social connectedness, and overall health citizens experience (especially in low income populations). This tool can help guide Humboldt County residents towards recognizing what healthy development is, in what ways proposed developments will or will not contribute to residents' health, and how existing neighborhoods could be improved. The Checklist consists of six sections: Land Use, Safe and Sustainable Transportation, Safety and Social Cohesion, Environmental Stewardship, Housing, and Resident Action Tools for Success. Download the Healthy Development Checklist (HDCL).

Walkability Audits
What are the barriers to having a neighborhood where it's safe to stroll? Walkability audits help you measure how 'walkable' your neighborhod is and how it might be improved. HumPAL has hosted or assisted with several Walkability Audits in Humboldt County.

South Fortuna Elementary Walkability Audit: Jen Rice, Co-Director of Natural Resources Services Division of Redwood Community Action Agency shares information about HumPAL, Safe Routes to Schools and Walkability Audits in this presentation: Designing Active Communities, Connecting Community Design, Public Appeal and Public Health [PDF].
